The Effects Of THC & CBD: Important Info Parents Should Know

According to a study conducted in 2017 by The Journal Of Pediatric Pharmacology And Therapeutics, the use of cannabis-derived medicinal products is gaining popularity (surprise?) despite its controversial nature. With many children suffering from various medical conditions, it’s fair that parents are asking if cannabis can be a holistic solution.

As of November 2016, over 40 states have passed legislation regarding the use of either medical marijuana or cannabidiol products. While the debate for cannabis products existence in the recreational and medicinal fields goes on, there needs to be a special consideration on the side of pediatrics.

Diamond Green neither promotes or condones the use of any THC or CBD products on anyone under the age of 21. But, we feel this is a prevalent topic that deserves to have light shed on it.

We feel like a lot of parents are asking: what are the effects of cannabis products on children and adolescents?

Different marijuana strains will have varying amounts of both THC and CBD, and thus the concentrations and ratios of these different cannabinoids within a product, especially for pediatric use, has been a subject of interest not only for medical professionals but also for state legislators as well.

Marijuana contains a lot of different chemicals called cannabinoids. These are the chemicals found within weed that interact with specific receptors within the body. These are called Cannabinoid (CB) receptors. There are over 60 types of cannabinoids currently known, and their identifications differ by the degree to which they are psychoactive.

CBD Changes The Game

While delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) that’s the most commonly associated cannabinoid with “marijuana” is psychoactive, other cannabinoids such as CBD aren’t. THC has been linked to the development of schizophrenia, and a contributor to neuro-development deficits in adolescents.

THC seems to possess anti-seizure activity but may be a pro-convulsant in certain species. CBD, however, does not appear to bind to either major CB receptors but does possess neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory effects.

It has been suggested that CBD may be effective in fighting epilepsy through modulation of the endocannabinoid system. CBD halts the degradation of the endocannabinoid anandamide, which may have a role in inhibiting seizures. Additionally, research demonstrates that CBD may play a role in the regulation of T-type calcium channels, which have been implicated in seizure activity.

Because CBD is one of the most abundant cannabinoids within cannabis resin and its mechanism is still unclear, there is peaked interest in the possible clinical indications that it could treat including epilepsy, pain, and inflammatory disorders, not just i

The Effects Of THC & CBD On Kids: Everything Parents Should Know

Cannabis Products Helping Sick Children

Charlotte Figi

CBD oil has been used broadly among children with health issues. A six-year-old girl named Charlotte Figi was given CBD oil to calm her seizures in a famous study recently conducted. She was diagnosed with Dravet syndrome, a debilitating condition that causes seizures and paralysis in the body. After being given CBD oil by her mother that she purchased at a local pot shop, her daughter’s episodes went down to fewer than one a week as opposed to 300 a week.

Saving Sophie

Tracy Ryan founded Saving Sophie after her daughter Sophie was diagnosed with brain cancer less than a year after her birth. Tracy began searching for an alternative medicine to quell and eliminate her daughter’s illness. Through her research, she found that over 155 scholarly studies have shown cannabis can kill certain forms of cancer effectively.

After experimenting with some of these cannabis-related treatments on her daughter, she found that her daughter showed signs of vast improvements, such as less day-to-day queasiness, and quicker hair-regrowth after chemo.
